The connection between Scuola Normale Superiore and the ancient city into the heart of Western Sicily has been so strong for many decades so we are happy to announce the 2020 SNS excavation campaign at Rocca d’Entella (Contessa Entellina, PA).

The SNS – under the guidance of its Greek and Roman History Professors and in close cooperation with the Archaeological Superintendence of Palermo – has been exploring the site since 1984. The territory of Entella was the area of settlement of the Elymians then Hellenized, later in the hands of the Campanians, occupied by the Romans and abondoned in the Imperial age and then again thriving under the Arabs, the Northmen and the Sueves.
This cultural stratification is reflected in the complexity of the unearthed buildings and in the different types of finds recovered during the excavations. Many artifacts are exhibited in the Antiquarium ‘G. Nenci’ in Contessa Entellina.

The excavation will take place from September 7th to the 26th and will continue the exploration of the vast summit plateau where the ancient town lied.

Scholars and students from SNS, University of Pise and Florence will be guided by Anna Magnetto (SNS) and Maria Cecilia Parra (UNiPI) together with the SAET staff. The longtime convention with the Parco Archeologico of Segesta, directed by Rossella Giglio and including the Entella site, guarantees a future full of far-reaching initiatives.
