Abstract. A true “return to Kaulonía” is what Carmine Ampolo and M. Cecilia Parra will do on April 12 and 13, giving two lectures at the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Kaulonía.
The events open the series of seminars “Kaulonía between land and sea: a Greek colony is told” organized by Elisa Nisticò – Director of the Archaeological Museum and Park – and M. Teresa Iannelli – Director of the Calabrian Library Institute.
The main stages of the excavations that Scuola Normale and the University of Pisa conducted in the sanctuary of Punta Stilo between 1999 and 2014, under the scientific direction of M. Cecilia Parra, will be retraced, presenting what allowed to know the ‘spaces’ in the sanctuary: not only for monuments, but also for ritual practices, cultic devices, production facilities, in short, of a ‘fabric’ in which the most well-known building of the sanctuary – the Doric temple discovered by Paolo Orsi – was inserted, which had remained isolated for a long time. It is precisely in a privileged space that the Tabula Cauloniensis (480-470 B.C.). was found, an exceptional epigraphic text that Carmine Ampolo will illustrate in its dense contents of cults and culture of the city in the fifth century B.C.
