Scope of the project is to create an index of the Bibliografia Topografica della Colonizzazione greca in Italia e nelle isole tirreniche (BTCGI) – an encyclopaedic work published by the Scuola Normale Superiore with the contribution of the École Française de Rome and the Centre J. Bérard in Naples. The leading idea is to make the toponymy and the historic and archaeological content of the entries available online.
At a preliminary stage, between 2011 and 2012, lemmas started being digitalised and indexed based exclusively on toponymy. The potential of the information thus collected suggests the need to provide frequent updates and additional toponymic headings. The project consists, above all, in expanding the index of the 2856 entries analysed in the work and concerning colonisation sites: indexing will be extended to those themes derived from literary, epigraphic, numismatic, archaeological and bibliographic sources.
This vast wealth of data, currently available only in hard copy (21 volumes, 1977-2012), will be re-elaborated in a logical scheme, in order to identify those peculiar contents (cultural, topographic, historic and archaeological, etc.) that can be transferred into a Data Base Management System (DBMS). Endless possibilities for cross-referencing will be available through the Data Query Language (DQL) process, which will allow the contents of the work to be adapted to the most modern forms of online scientific dissemination.
Peculiar themes can be highlighted through cartographic transformation (from simple layers to the most complex GIS). A first experimental test will be run over some specific areas of Sicily and Magna Graecia currently interested by SAET Projects.
