Ephebikon is the term used to define a room built at Segesta by a gymnasium president in the Hellenistic-Roman period. This was revealed by an inscription placed on a statue base found in situ, thanks to the archaeological excavations in the area of the agora undertaken by the SAET Laboratory of the Scuola Normale Superiore directed by Anna Magnetto . The epigraphic and archaeological research, conducted here for years under the scientific responsibility of Carmine Ampolo and Maria Cecilia Parra, now together with Anna Magnetto, has been significantly increasing our knowledge on the central part of the ancient city (Hellenistic agora, Roman forum, and nearby areas) and sheds further light on the city life and the history of the ancient Segesta.
The conference intends to introduce a general reflection on the theme of the gymnasium and its role in the life of the polis, with a particular reference to how this was received in Hellenized and mixed-culture areas, presenting recent research results, between history and archaeology.
Organization: Carmine Ampolo, Anna Magnetto, Maria Cecilia Parra
