SNS archaeological excavations resume in Sicily

Within the framework of the current agreements of Scuola Normale Superiore with the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and with the Segesta Archaeological Park, the SAET is conducting excavation campaigns at the sites of Agrigento (scientific direction prof. G. Adornato, SNS) and Entella (scientific direction prof. A. Magnetto, SNS; field supervisor prof. M.C. Parra, UniPI).

Students, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, collaborators and archaeological technicians from the Scuola Normale, as well as trainees from the Universities of Pisa, Florence, Padua, Rome and Venice, and a ‘visiting student’ from the University of Amsterdam, will take part in the excavations

Under the aegis of the Archaeological Park of Agrigento, the curricular experience of the European EELISA network continues for the year 2023 thanks to the presence of lecturers, researchers and students from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) and İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi (ITU). Alongside the excavation and survey work at the ‘Temple D’ sanctuary, in the area of the altar and the western stereobate of the temple, a new investigation at the ekklesiasterion of the ancient city on the Poggio di San Nicola will be added, thanks to PNRR funding.

At Entella, dissemination, valorization and outreach activities will be added to the excavation activities in the two most significant contexts of the urban area: the monumental complex in the eastern valley and the ancient buildings preexisting the medieval palace in the southern sector. The Municipality of Contessa Entellina will make its guest quarters available and, together with the Donnafugata Winery, which annually funds the “G. Nenci” study award, will contribute to the expenses.
